Kennedy/Hutchinson Comprehensive Cancer Bill
The bill, spearheaded by Senators Edward Kennedy (D-MA) and Kay Bailey Hutchinson (R-TX), is a bi-partisan movement to evaluate the nation's progress on cancer research and treatment. It encompasses several bills addressing cancer prevention, treatment and survivorship that were introduced last year.
The Kennedy-Hutchison Bill will:
- Focus on translational research, meaning new discoveries and breakthroughs in the laboratory will get to the patients as quickly as possible.
- Remove barriers in the research process that hinder new discoveries, by promoting collaboration, public-private partnerships and engaging young researchers.
- Place an emphasis on early detection.
- Improve access to cancer care for underserved populations, which includes expanding access to clinical trials.

About Komen Advocacy
Susan G. Komen for the Cure has a long and rich history in public policy advocacy that spans more than 20 years. In order to achieve our promise of eradicating breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment, Susan G. Komen for the Cure believes that scientific progress must be complemented by sound public policy. In this regard, Susan G. Komen for the Cure works to influence public policy-makers at the federal, state and local levels to increase public investment in quality breast health and breast cancer care.
As part of our advocacy efforts, we have established Komen Champions for the cure, a structured grassroots program designed to educate Congress, the President and other policy-makers about breast cancer through community involvement.
